Supporting The Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team.

A high risk missing person was reported in the Northumberland area. Northumbria Police requested the use of #SARLOC and #PhoneFind to assist in locating the missing person. Unfortunately the missing male did not respond to either.
As the Duty Controller for North of Tyne MRT and ourselves was liaising with the Police Search Adviser, it was confirmed the male had been located.
The incident involved 1 Team member for 1 hour 20 minutes.

Yesterday evening our Duty Controller responded to a request from Northumbria Police. On behalf of North of Tyne MRT and ourselves, the Duty Controller used #SARLOC and #PhoneFind in an attempt to locate a high risk missing person. No response was received.
No further action was required by the Mountain Rescue Teams.
The incident involved 1 Team member for 1 hour 20 minutes.

It is not since early January that we’ve had a full week with no incidents. Well that was last week!
On Tuesday, Northumbria Police requested support in locating a vulnerable missing person in the Bedlington area. #PhoneFind, a new location tool at our disposal, and #SARLOC we’re both used by our Duty Controller.
A member of public came across the missing person soon after and the Team and North of Tyne MRT were stood down.
The incident involved 2 Team members for 1.5 hours.

Late on Friday night, our Duty Controller responded to a request from Northumbria Police for support in locating a vulnerable person. #SARLOCwas utilised but unfortunately the missing person did not respond. Without further information the Team and North of Tyne MRT stood down.
Thankfully the missing person returned home the following day, safe and well.
The incident involved 1 Team member for 1.5 hours.

Location: Kielder Water
On Sunday the North East Ambulance Service requested Mountain Rescue’s support for an injured cyclist at Kielder Water. Initially the exact location of the cyclist and intended route was unknown. #SARLOC was successfully used by North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves to fix the cyclist’s location, identified as being on the Lakeside Way, east of Gowanburn.
The cyclist was treated on scene by NEAS and evacuated using the Hazardous Area Response Team’s ATV with Mountain Rescue’s assistance.
Whilst responding to the above incident, both MRTs were also requested to assist Northumbria Police in locating a vulnerable male. The male was successfully located near to Kielder Dam by Mountain Rescue members.
The incidents involved 12 Team members for 3 hours 10 minutes.

Location: Pennine Way, Cheviot Hills
As Team members were settling down for a Friday night in, Border Search and Rescue Unit requested our support for an overdue walker on the #PennineWay. As part of our agreed #CrossBorder procedure, North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves responded. The walker in his 70s had been last seen at Phillip’s Cross as they headed along the Border Ridge towards Cocklawfoot in the Bowmont Water valley on the Scottish side.
This gave us an initial linear route of 25km to search in the dark!
As temperatures were falling to zero degrees on the tops of the hills, hasty teams from both sides of the Border and a Search And Rescue Dog Association England team were deployed. A #Coastguard helicopter was also requested to assist.
Whilst other members were travelling to Upper Coquetdale in Northumberland National Park, news came in that the walker had made their way safely off the hill to Barrowburn farm. He had made a ‘slight’ navigational error near #WindyGyle, heading south into England instead of north into Scotland. Oops!
A big ‘thank you’ to the farmer and his wife at Barrowburn for the much needed cups of tea!
The incident involved 15 Team members for 3 hours.

Our Duty Controller responded to a request from Northumbria Policeyesterday evening for support in locating a vulnerable missing female. Responding on behalf of North of Tyne MRT and ourselves, our Duty Controller used #SARLOC and made contact with the female. Information provided by #MountainRescue led to the missing person being located safe and well by the Police. A good outcome for all concerned.

Northumbria Police requested support in locating a missing person from North Tyneside in the early hours of yesterday morning. The Duty Controller for North of Tyne MRT and ourselves used #SARLOC but unfortunately the missing person did not respond to the text. Thankfully though the person turned in hospital and #MountainRescue were stood down.
The incident involved 1 Team member for 1 hour 10 minutes.

Two incidents in one day clearly wasn’t enough. As one incident was finishing and another was starting, Northumbria Police requested our assistance for a high risk missing person. With limited information available on the whereabouts of the missing person, the Duty Controller for North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves used SARLOC. Unfortunately no response was received and Police enquiries are ongoing.
The incident involved two Team members for 2 hours 20 minutes.

Location: Kyloe Crag
Whilst we were dealing with incident number 69, Northumbria Policerequested our assistance for a fallen climber at Kyloe Crag in north #Northumberland. The climber had fallen 5-6 feet and had sustained a suspected fractured ankle.
Given that some of our assets were still tied up at Hareshaw Linn, North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves dispatched two other emergency response vehicles and called out the remaining Team members. The members once clear of Hareshaw Linn also attended.
The North East Ambulance Service also responded and a crew was on scene swiftly. Whilst the Ambulance crew dealt with the casualty, #MountainRescue rigged a stretcher lower. The casualty was then lowered on a stretcher to the foot of the steep slope below the crag, before being carried to the Team Land Rover. A short ride in the Land Rover followed and then a swift transfer into the crewed Ambulance at the road near Black Heddon for onward transport to hospital.
The Team would like to wish the climber well and we hope he makes a full and swift recovery.
