Incident No: 79 2018

Location: Pennine Way, Cheviot Hills

As Team members were settling down for a Friday night in, Border Search and Rescue Unit requested our support for an overdue walker on the #PennineWay. As part of our agreed #CrossBorder procedure, North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves responded. The walker in his 70s had been last seen at Phillip’s Cross as they headed along the Border Ridge towards Cocklawfoot in the Bowmont Water valley on the Scottish side.

This gave us an initial linear route of 25km to search in the dark!

As temperatures were falling to zero degrees on the tops of the hills, hasty teams from both sides of the Border and a Search And Rescue Dog Association England team were deployed. A #Coastguard helicopter was also requested to assist.

Whilst other members were travelling to Upper Coquetdale in Northumberland National Park, news came in that the walker had made their way safely off the hill to Barrowburn farm. He had made a ‘slight’ navigational error near #WindyGyle, heading south into England instead of north into Scotland. Oops!

A big ‘thank you’ to the farmer and his wife at Barrowburn for the much needed cups of tea!

Incident No: 65 2018

Location: Shillmoor, Upper Coquetdale

On Sunday we were involved a major, multi-agency search for the driver of a vehicle after it was reported in the river near Shillmoor. North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves worked alongside Northumbria Police and their Marine Unit, Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service’s Swiftwater teams, and the North East Ambulance Service‘s HART team. NPAS Newcastle was also deployed to overfly the area.

We deployed our specially trained and equipped Swiftwater & Flood First Responders and air-scenting search dogs to search the river banks downstream of where the vehicle was located.

Tragically, late afternoon on Sunday, a body was located downstream of Shillmoor.

Our Team Leader, Iain Nixon, said “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends as well as with the wider community in Upper Coquetdale at this very difficult time.”

The incident involved 22 Team members for 7 hours.

The 35th Cheviots Challenge

The 35th Cheviots Challenge is fast approaching and will take place next weekend – Saturday 3 September. This fantastic event will get you high in the hills of the Northumberland National Park with the Team close by in strategic locations along the route to keep you safe.

This single event raises around 15% of the annual operating cost of the Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team so you’ll get that warm and fuzzy feeling inside too!

There is a choice of route:

Terry Lynn long route is about 23 miles and over 3500 feet of climbing and will include Clennell Street, Windy Gyle, Swinside Law, Battleshiel Haugh.

Eileen Lynn short route is about 18 miles and over 2500 feet of climbing and will include Clennell Street, Barrow Law, Battleshiel Haugh.

Both routes will take you through and over the beautiful Upper Coquetdale and Cheviot Hills. On the day of the event you will receive a route card and a photocopy map giving details of the route.

Cheviots Challenge

35th Cheviots Challenge,

Saturday Saturday 3rd September 2016.

The Cheviots Challenge is a fundraising event in aid of the Mountain Rescue Team. It is designed as a personal challenge rather than a competition.

There is a choice of two challenging long distance walks:

‘Terry Lynn’ long route or the ‘Eileen Lynn’ short route – both will take you on a journey in the upper Coquetdale and Cheviot hills, start and finish at the Rose and Thistle Inn, Alwinton, Northumberland.

On the day of the event, you will receive a route card and a photocopy map giving details of the route. Checkpoints along the route must be visited before the closing time shown on the route card. Checkpoints can provide first aid and one or more will provide refreshments. Participants completing the event between 0800 and 2000 hours will be awarded, upon presentation of a completed route card, a certificate and souvenir mug.

Once again a souvenir T-Shirt of the event is available to order, payment extra to entry.
