Incident No: 57 2017

Location: Stocksfield, Northumberland

Mid-afternoon on Saturday, Northumbria Police requested our assistance in a search for a vulnerable male in his late 40s. His abandoned car was found on the outskirts of Stocksfield, Northumberland.

Along with North of Tyne Mountain Rescue, we responded immediately with our Incident Officer travelling to liaise with the Police Search Adviser whilst drivers were allocated for our 4×4 response vehicles and Team members were placed on standby.

At 15.30hrs the Teams were called out to work alongside Police officers searching routes emanating from, and small wooded areas immediately adjacent to, the missing male’s car. The map shows the tracks of our search groups and dog teams. SARLOC was also used but unfortunately the missing male did not respond to the text.

The incident ended when the missing person was located safe and well in Edinburgh, having taken a train from Stocksfield!

The incident involved 20 Team members and two search dogs for 5 hours.

Mountain Rescue

Incident No: 56 2017

Location: Durham area

On Wednesday evening, Northumbria Police requested advice from our Duty Controller regarding a missing female in her early 40s from Sunderland. She had last been seen the day before at her home. Information from the Police suggested the missing female might have used public transport to get to Durham.

SARLOC and a follow up text message was used by the Duty Controller, acting on behalf of the Team and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team. Unfortunately the missing female did not respond to either message and in agreement with the Police the incident was closed.

The incident involved 1 Team member for 3 hours.

Land Rover Ambulance

Incident No: 51 2017

Location: Whittingham

On Monday morning North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves deployed to assist Northumbria Police in the ongoing search for Damion Willcock from Whittingham. Damion was last seen by his family at 10.00am on Sunday.

In conjunction with the Police Search Adviser, our Incident Officer devised a search plan which was implemented and reviewed over the two days of the search. Working alongside Northumbria Police officers, a body was sadly located on day two of the search, in one of the prioritised wooded areas.

Our thoughts are with Damion’s family and friends at this very difficult time.

The incident involved 20 Team members and two search dogs for 9 hours and 45 minutes on day one, and 19 members and one search dog on day two for 7 hours.

Incident No: 52 2017

Location: Auchope Shelter, Pennine Way

As one of our incident controllers was liaising with Northumbria Police regarding incident number 51, more details to follow, a second request for support came in. This time for an injured female walker who had spent the night in the Auchope Mountain Refuge Hut. The female had been walking the Pennine Way and on descending from Auchope Cairn on Sunday had damaged her ankle. Being well equipped she decided to spend the night in the shelter before trying to finish her journey the following day.

Unfortunately with the prevailing weather and the state of her ankle, the walker rightly requested help from Mountain Rescue. North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves responded from the College Valley and Border Search & Rescue Unit from Sourhope Farm on the Scottish side of the border. We were assisted by the College Valley Estates, once again, with the use of one of their ATVs.

The walker was ultimately evacuated down to Sourhope Farm by the Border’s team.

Having got so close to completing the Pennine Way, we hope the female makes a swift recovery and returns to complete the last few miles.

Incident No: 49 2017

Location: Hexham area

Earlier in the week members of our joint controller group with North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team responded to a request for support from Northumbria Police to help locate a vulnerable female. SARLOC – the text based location App – was used but unfortunately the female did not respond to the text. The female was, however, located shortly afterwards by Police Officers in a field close to her home address.

The incident involved 4 members for 1 hour 10 minutes.

Mountain Rescue

Incident No: 48 2017

Time: 19.59hrs
Location: Hexham

We received a SARCALL activation from Northumbria Police at 19.59 hrs to assist with a search for a vulnerable female in her early 70s who was last seen by her husband in a supermarket carpark in Hexham.

The Police already had officers on the ground searching and had called in the National Police Air Support Unit to assist.

The Team and North of Tyne MRT were placed on standby and drivers were arranged whilst our controller liaised with the Police to gain more information to aid deployment.

Whilst we were talking to the Police control room, the good news came through that the female had been located safe and well.

The teams were stood down and normal family life resumed!

The incident involved three members for 30 minutes.

Incident No: 47 2017

Location: Seahouses

In the early hours of this morning Northumbria Police requested our support in locating a high risk missing person in the Seahouses and Beadnell area of Northumberland. Given the information available, deploying the Team and North of Tyne MRT was not required. Instead, the Duty Controller assisted by liaising with the Police Search Adviser and sending a SARLOC to the misper’s phone before monitoring for a response.

The National Police Air Support unit was utilised and Police Officers provided ground support. The misper was located 45 minutes later.

Back to bed by 4.00am!!

The incident involved two members for 45 minutes.

Mountain Rescue

Incident No: 46 2017

Time: 03.20hrs
Location: North Tyne Valley

In the early hours of Sunday morning, Northumbria Police requested assistance in an ongoing search for a missing female in the North Tyne valley. North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves responded with Incident Controllers liaising with the Police Search Adviser to agree a search plan.

The Teams were called out soon after and deployed to search paths, tracks and wooded areas near to the missing person’s point last seen. Assistance was also requested from Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team to search the banks of the nearby rivers as we had a limited number of water trained members available.

Nearly six hours later the missing female was located by one of our search groups, safe and well, and was soon reunited with her family. A good outcome for all concerned.

Incident No: 45 2017

Take Two…

As the first pint was being drunk after the Cotswold Outdoor sponsored #Cheviot2017 Challenge, Northumbria Police activated North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves for a re-run of a rescue we performed at a similar time last year.

A 11 year old boy became crag fast after climbing to the top of the Drake Stone. Thankfully the RV was just down the valley from Rose & Thistle at Alwinton and we were swiftly on scene.

After two members climbed to the top of the Stone, a technical rope rescue system was used to lower one of the Team members and the boy safely to the ground.

We think he really enjoyed the ride!

After clearing the incident site, sorting the kit and a quick ‘hot debrief’ it was back to the pub for a well earned drink and barbecue. All in a day’s work!

Incident No: 41 2017

Location: Housesteads, Hadrian’s Wall

The Team and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team were contacted by Northumbria Police to assist in locating and evacuating a male who was suffering severe chest pains. The request for assist had come initially from the North East Ambulance Service.

The male was located 1/4 mile from Milecastle 37 just to the west of Housesteads. Due to the nature of the male’s condition, helicopter support was requested. The Great North Air Ambulance Service responded and was able to land on near the casualty, before flying them to hospital.
