*** Incident No.53 (update) ***

The Team was stood down mid-morning yesterday from providing additional support to the flood event in Cumbria. The impact (thankfully) wasn’t as great as expected. Our water team remained on standby for flood related incidents in Northumberland throughout the remainder of the day, ready to assist Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service if required.

During this time the Team responded to two other incidents – details to follow – and we were also requested to provide assets to assist other MRTs and emergency services in York where flood defences had failed. Due to an ongoing incident in our operational area we are unable to respond at this time.

*** Incident No.43 ***

Earlier this afternoon the Team and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team were requested by the North East Ambulance Service to attend an individual who had collapsed in the Yetlington area of Northumberland. Due to the conditions the helicopter was unable to fly. Consequently a vehicle, Team members and a Team Doctor were mobilised quickly.

Notwithstanding the efforts of the Paramedics and Team members, the 50 year old male died. The man was on a shoot when he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Our thoughts go out to the man’s family and friends at this difficult time.

The incident involved 14 Team members for 2 hours.

*** Incident No.34 ***

At just before 2.00pm the Team and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Teamwas called to assist the North East Ambulance Service. A 22 year female had fallen off a motorcycle in north Northumberland, near Kirknewton. She had a suspected fractured lower leg.

Due to her location we also requested the assistance of Borders Search & Rescue Unit and ultimately RAF Boulmer to fly the casualty to hospital. Possibly the last time operationally we will see the Seaking.

In total six members from three MRTs and two Land Rover ambulances were involved.

50 for 50 campaign

50th_anniversary_badgeIn this our 50th year we are going all out to try to raise £50,000. The funds raised as part of our “50 for 50” campaign will help us to convert a recently donated trailer into a new mobile control/command unit (£25k), purchase new communications technology such as digital high band radios (£20k) and invest in additional equipment including dry suits and personal flotation devices to ensure the safety of our Team members when working around water (£5k).

As a charitable organisation, run by volunteers, we are reliant on the generosity of the general public to fund the life saving, emergency service we provide. Donations, no matter how small or large, towards our £50k target would be gratefully received.

If you are able to help us… please donate through our Just Giving page, https://www.justgiving.com/nnpmrt/.

Our 50th Anniversary

The Team is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. Following a tragic incident involving two shepherds near Ewartly Shank, a number of voluntary wardens from the Northumberland National Park formed the Mountain Rescue Team in 1965. Since that time the Team has been providing a life saving, emergency service.

To mark our 50th Anniversary we will be launching our “50 for 50” fund-raising campaign. More details to follow.

*** Incident No.21 ***

A female competitor in the Chevvy Chase sustained a lower leg injury. After leg was strapped by one of our Medics she was able to weight bare with assistance. A slow supported walk off from the top of Hedgehope Hill followed. This was a great relief to the rest of the Team as the alternative was a long stretcher carry!!

Prospective Trainees Training

Five prospective trainees have been put through their paces today. Given the clear conditions we focused on micro navigation using a map, compass and techniques such as aiming off, timing/pacing and re-section and triangulation, amongst others. A great day with all five progressing to become trainees. Well done!

Now the hard work starts with a minimum of a 12 month structured training programme.
