Incident No: 115 2018

Date: 16 September 2018
Time: 20.00hrs
Location: Walltown Quarry, Hadrian’s Wall

Late afternoon yesterday North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves were responded to a request from North East Ambulance Service. A walker had slipped and sustained a leg injury a few hundred yards from the car park at Walltown Quarry on Hadrian’s Wall.

Vehicles and #volunteer members were swiftly deployed to RV at Walltown Quarry. #PhoneFind, a SMS location tool, was used to pin point the exact location of the casualty.

Local members liaised with the on scene NEAS Community Paramedic and Ambulance crew. The casualty was then evacuated a short distance on the NEAS stretcher as our other resources arrived at the RVP.

The incident involved 19 Team members for 2 hours 30 minutes.

Incident No: 108 2018

Location: Heworth

North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves were called out yesterday by Northumbria Police to assist in the search for a vulnerable male in his 70s. The male was last seen near his home, late afternoon the day before.

Following a briefing and planning meeting with the Police Search Adviser, open and wooded areas close to the man’s home were searched. With limited further information available at that stage the Teams stood down.

The incident involved 15 Team members for 10 hours 20 minutes.

Incident No: 105 2018

Location: Whitely Shield

Three days, two incidents! Yesterday we had a short lived incident involving a female in her 70s who had sustained a leg injury on the hillside above Whiteley Shield in the West Allen valley. The request for Mountain Rescue support had come from the North East Ambulance Service, who had established there was no vehicle access to the casualty’s location.

Ultimately neither ourselves and North of Tyne MRT nor NEAS were required as the caller and the casualty had thankfully managed to make their own way off the hill. Just as the first of our members was arriving at the RVP!

The incident involved 5 Team members for 31 minutes.

Incident No: 104 2018

Location: Sycamore Gap, Hadrian’s Wall

Our quiet period came to end earlier today when Northumbria Police requested Mountain Rescue’s support in evacuating an injured female walker on Hadrian’s Wall. The female had been stabilised by a Northumberland National Park Ranger before the Team’s and North of Tyne MRT’s members arrived.

Two North East Ambulance Service Paramedics were also transported to the scene. They provided pain relief before the walker was evacuated in a Mountain Rescue Landrover to the road at Steel Rigg.

We wish the walker a speedy recovery and would like to thank the Ranger and a passing Doctor for their assistance.

The incident involved 22 Team members for 2 hours 30 minutes.

Incident Number: 101 2018

Location: North Shields

An early morning call from Northumbria Police requesting Mountain Rescue’s support in locating a high risk, vulnerable male missing from home in the North Shields area. As the Team were mobilising for a first light search thankfully the missing person was found by Police Officers.

The incident involved 8 Team member for 19 minutes.

Incident No: 100 2018

Location: Plessey Woods Country Park

A first for the Team, the number of incidents in one year has reached treble figures!

Northumbria Police requested Mountain Rescue’s support in locating a vulnerable missing male in the Plessey Woods area. Police dogs and the National Police Air Support unit were already searching for the missing person.

Our Duty Controller responded and used PhoneFind and SARLOC location tools. Unfortunately neither generated a response – the missing person needs to voluntarily click on the weblink in the text message to reveal their location on our mapping software.

Thankfully a member of the public came across the missing person, outside of the search area, and requested an Ambulance.

The incident involved 1 Team member for 2 hours.

Incident No: 99 2018

Time: 16.31 hrs
Location: Norham, near Berwick

As the country was getting ready for the England match, Northumbria Policerequested support from North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves for a vulnerable male, missing from home in the Norham area. Both Teams were deployed to search paths and tracks, the banks of the River Tweed and wooded areas close to Norham.

Border Search and Rescue Unit were also alerted. They stood down though as the Teams on the south side of the Scottish border located the missing person, safe and well.

Incident No: 97 2018

Location: Crag Lough, Hadrian’s Wall

Mid-afternoon yesterday a climber fell from Crag Lough and sustained serious injuries. The North East Ambulance Service requested the assistance of North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves and within 9 minutes our volunteers were en-route with two Team 4x4s deployed.

The Doctor and Paramedic from the Great North Air Ambulance Service were first on scene and assessed, treated and stabilised the casualty.

Given the difficult, unstable terrain below the crag and the worsening condition of the casualty, the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) search and rescue helicopter was requested with a view to winching the casualty on board. Thankfully a helicopter from Caernarfon was training in the Lake District and swiftly arrived on scene.

Great multi-agency teamwork then led to the successful evacuation of the injured climber to hospital. We hope he makes a full and swift recovery, and is back out climbing again very soon.

Northumbria Police requested the use of PhoneFind and SARLOC to assist in locating a missing person. The Duty Controller acting on behalf of North of Tyne MRT and ourselves duly obliged. No response to SMS messages was received.

The incident involved 1 Team member for 1 hour.

Incident No: 91 2018

Date: 7 June 2018
Time: 13.38 hrs
Location: Blanchland

A female walker in her early 70s sustained a lower leg injury, whilst on a walk along the River Derwent from Blanchland. The North East Ambulance Service requested the assistance of Mountain Rescue, and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves responded immediately.

Team members assisted in locating the female and her husband, and evacuated her after being assessed by a NEAS Paramedic on a Mountain Rescue stretcher to the awaiting ambulance.

We hope the female makes a full and swift recovery and is back out walking the stunning #Northumberland countryside soon.
