Incident No: 69 2018

The North East Ambulance Service requested Mountain Rescue’s assistance for a walker in her 60s who had fallen and sustained serious injuries.

Having just finished technical rope rescue training, we immediately dispatched two blue light vehicles and eight members to Hareshaw Linn. Other local members from North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves were also called out.

Working alongside NEAS the casualty was evacuated on a #MountainRescuestretcher and then carried towards Blakelaw Farm, the nearest access point. For the final few 100 metres the NEAS Hazardous Area Response Team’s ATV was used.

We hope the female makes a swift recovery and is back out walking again soon.

The Team would like to thank the farmer at Blakelaw Farm for his assistance during the incident. The use of an ATV to get kit to and from the scene was much appreciated.

The incident involved 13 members for 2 hours 3 minutes.

The Beast From The East MRT Response

Our #MountainRescue volunteers have been out yesterday afternoon and overnight assisting North East Ambulance Service and Northumbria Policedealing with the extreme weather the North East has experienced. Working alongside North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team, we’ve been deployed in our 4x4s on blue light responses to patients in need of urgent care, patient transfers from rural locations to hospital and a number of RTCs involving stranded motorists in #snow drifts.

Our Mountain Rescue England and Wales 4×4 resources with medics on board have been up to Cornhill near Coldstream, out to Bellingham in the west and down to Allendale in the south of our operational area. Driving conditions can only be described as treacherous.

In total we have responded to 15 incidents in less than 24 hours. More details will be provided when conditions ease. We’re currently changing shifts.

Northumbria Police contacted the joint North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Teamand Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team controller group to request assistance with a search for a missing female in her mid-70s. The female who is living dementia went missing from home in Whitburn, near South Shields.

As part of a #MultiAgency response, the MRTs were tasked to search inland areas to the west of Whitburn. At the same time the coastal strip was being searched by the HM Coastguard teams. The HM Coastguard helicopter from Humberside was also tasked to provide support.

By mid-morning the missing person was found safe and well. A great outcome, much to the relief of all concerned.

Incident No: 11 2018

Late last night Northumbria Police requested the support of North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves in searching for a high risk missing female. The female in her late 50s had been reported missing from home, earlier in the evening.

A search plan was developed by our Incident Officer in conjunction with the Police Search Adviser. Search groups and two Search And Rescue Dog Association England dog teams were then deployed to search high priority routes and areas to the west of Seaton Burn and towards the Big Waters Country Park. The search proved negative and the Teams were stood down in the early hours of this morning.

As most members were heading into work after only a couple of hours sleep, the Police notified us that the missing person had been found safe and well in a property by a family member. We hope the female now receives the support she needs.

Incident No: 08 2018

Another day, another incident making three incidents in three days for North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves.

Northumbria Police contacted the Teams in the early hours of yesterday. A male in his mid-80s had been reported missing from his home in Heaton by a relative. Initial information suggested that the male may have headed to Northumberland for a walk. With limited information our incident controller group, working with the Police Search Adviser, explored possible scenarios.

Over the next few hours the Police continued their enquiries; eventually it became apparent that the elderly male was safe and well, having spent the night in bed at Bellingham Youth Hostel.

Please can we remind walkers or other outdoor users to leave details of their intended plans/routes with a relative or friend to help the Emergency Services including the volunteer #MountainRescue Teams to coordinate a response in the event of them being reported overdue.

Incident No: 04 & 05 2018

With a Met Office Amber warning over Northumberland and Tyne & Wear, and heavy snow falling over most of the area, Northumbria Police requested the assistance of North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves in the early hours of yesterday morning. Drivers, navigators and medics were swiftly allocated and made their way to the Teams’ bases at West Denton and Pegswood Fire Stations.

Soon after the North East Ambulance Service also requested our assistance and one 4×4 with a driver and Team medic on board was despatched to transfer a patient to the RVI.

The other four 4x4s, including a Northumberland National Park 4×4 in Rothbury, were then despatched to check the main arterial roads in rural #Northumberland and the main B roads between some of the more highly populated villages. The vehicle trackers show the extent of our travels, checking for stranded motorists and abandoned vehicles.

Whilst driving conditions were very difficult at times and much snow had fallen, conditions started to improve by 06.00hrs. The Teams stood down at 08.30hrs.

The incidents involved 12 Team members for six hours.

Incident No: 02 2018

Late on Thursday night the Duty Controller for North of Tyne MRT and ourselves responded to a request from Northumbria Police. A vulnerable 19 year old female had been reported missing. Our Duty Controller liaised with the Force Operations Manager and used SARLOC to try to ascertain the female’s location.

Further information received by the Police suggested the missing person was out of our area in Cleveland. The missing person was located in the early hours of Friday morning.

The incident involved one Team member for 3 hours 45 minutes.

Mountain Rescue

Incident No: 63 2017

Late afternoon on Tuesday our Search Dog handler was placed on standby to assist Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team (TWSMRT) in locating a missing 15 year old male with autism. The young male had disappeared whilst on a school trip to Hamsterley Forest.

As the search was scaled up, our Search Dog handler was deployed to work alongside other handlers from the North East, TWSMRT, Cleveland MRT and Swaledale MRT. The HM Coastguard helicopter from Humberside was also involved by this stage.

We were then called alongside North of Tyne MRT at 22.32hrs to assist with the search from 08.30hrs the following day should the incident continue overnight. Thankfully as availability responses were being gathered by our Duty Controller, the good news came through that the young male had been located by Forestry Commission workers who had been driving the forest tracks.

A great result and relief for all concerned.

Land Rover Ambulance

Incident No: 52 2017

Location: Auchope Shelter, Pennine Way

As one of our incident controllers was liaising with Northumbria Police regarding incident number 51, more details to follow, a second request for support came in. This time for an injured female walker who had spent the night in the Auchope Mountain Refuge Hut. The female had been walking the Pennine Way and on descending from Auchope Cairn on Sunday had damaged her ankle. Being well equipped she decided to spend the night in the shelter before trying to finish her journey the following day.

Unfortunately with the prevailing weather and the state of her ankle, the walker rightly requested help from Mountain Rescue. North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves responded from the College Valley and Border Search & Rescue Unit from Sourhope Farm on the Scottish side of the border. We were assisted by the College Valley Estates, once again, with the use of one of their ATVs.

The walker was ultimately evacuated down to Sourhope Farm by the Border’s team.

Incident No: 49 2017

Location: Hexham area

Earlier in the week members of our joint controller group with North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team responded to a request for support from Northumbria Police to help locate a vulnerable female. SARLOC – the text based location App – was used but unfortunately the female did not respond to the text. The female was, however, located shortly afterwards by Police Officers in a field close to her home address.

The incident involved 4 members for 1 hour 10 minutes.
