*** Incident No.57 ***

Saturday 1 October 2016, 20.15hrs

Nearly 500 Scouts and Explorer Scouts were involved in Operation Twilight yesterday. They were walking in small groups between the drop off points at Bolam and Alwinton, and finding their own way back to Rothbury. Evading capture as they went!

Unfortunately a member of one of the groups sustained an ankle injury and was unable to continue. The Team was called to assist with evacuation. SARLOC, a Smart Phone location app, was used to pin point the location of the group before two Mountain Rescue Land Rovers and members were despatched.

The Land Rovers were almost able to access the group’s location, on the footpath to the SE of Spylaw, round the back of Simonside. Whilst the casualty was assessed, the other group members were transported off the fell. A short stretcher carry to the remaining vehicle then saw the casualty, who was also mildly hypothermic, safely evacuated back to Rothbury.

The casualty was then handed over to the Ambulance service.

The incident involved 7 Team members for 2 hours.

*** Incident No.56 **

Tuesday 27 September, 08.17hrs

Teesdale & Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team (TWSMRT) requested the Team’s assistance for what turned out to be a major search for a 40 year old grouse beater. The male went missing at 3.00 pm on Monday 26th September on Warcop Fell near the top of Lunedale County Durham. After searching for two hours without success his fellow beaters contacted the Police and Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team were contacted.

As time progressed realising that there was a huge potential search area help was requested from neighbouring MRTs, including TWSMRT. The search escalated overnight and in the early hours to involve teams from the Lake District Search And Mountain Rescue Association, the Yorkshire Dales Rescue Panel, the whole of the North East Search and Rescue Association, a RAF Mountain Rescue Team, 8 search dogs from the Search And Rescue Dog Association England and the Lake District Search & Rescue Dog Association, a and ourselves.

Conditions for searchers overnight were horrendous, and even in the daylight of Tuesday low cloud over the hills hampered the search.

As the weather improved and after a massive effort, the beater was found by a search group at 2.15pm today. He was warmed up and returned to the road safe and well. A good outcome for all concerned.

The incident involved 8 Team members for 9 hours 45 minutes.

*** Incident No.54 ***

Sunday 25 September, 15.58hrs

Earlier this afternoon the Team alongside North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team was activated by Northumbria Police for an experienced female walker who had slipped off the footpath leading into Hareshaw Linn from Bellingham.

The walker had fallen approximately 60 feet and whilst she was initially reported to be uninjured, she was unable to get out of gorge. A local team member, who is also a community Paramedic, was swiftly despatched to assess the situation.

The member was able to identify a safe route out of the gorge and the female was ‘walked out’ to the footpath. On further assessment the walker was complaining of chest pains; as a precaution she was taken to Cramlington hospital. We hope she makes a swift and full recovery.

This is the second incident this year in the Hareshaw Linn valley.

The incident involved 6 members for 1 hour 20 minutes. Another 8 members were on standby in case they were required.

Saturday 24 September 2016, 10.17hrs

Mid-morning yesterday the Team received a request from Northumbria Police to assist with a search for a high risk missing person in the Kielder area. The male’s car had been located in the car park at Kielder. Along with North of Tyne MRT, we headed up to Kielder Castle to liaise with the Police Search Adviser.

A detailed search of the woodland involving MR personnel, two Search & Rescue Dogs, a Police dog handler and Police officers was conducted in and around Kielder Castle. The National Police Air Support unit supported searchers on the ground by flying over the open areas.

As the search was progressing, further information came to light which indicated the missing person was out of the area. The Teams were stood down and Police investigations are ongoing.

The incident involved 16 Team members for 7 hours.
