Incident No: 111 2018

Location: Simonside

On Saturday afternoon, the North East Ambulance Service requested Mountain Rescue’s support for an injured climber on the north face of Simonside. North of Tyne MRT and ourselves immediately responded with local members arriving on scene a few minutes behind the Community Paramedic and first responder.

The climber had fallen approximately 10 metres before landing awkwardly on the ground below the crag.

After a full assessment and pain relieve being administered, the casualty was evacuated on a Mountain Rescue stretcher to the crewed Ambulance. Due to the nature of the terrain, a technical rope rescue system was used to safeguard the stretcher and the casualty.

The Teams were assisted by the climber’s friends and the NEAS HART team. We wish the climber a swift and full recovery from his injuries.

The incident involved 15 Team members for 3 hours 10 minutes.

Incident: 109 2018

Location: Heworth

Northumbria Police requested Mountain Rescue’s support again for the ongoing search for a vulnerable male in the Heworth area. The Mountain Rescue Incident Officer worked with the Police Search Adviser to develop and agree a search plan.

Team members were deployed from late afternoon into the evening to search open areas, paths and tracks, hedgerows and wooded areas in the vicinity of the missing male’s home.

Unfortunately the male has yet to be located and Police enquiries are ongoing.

The incident involved 18 Team members for 11 hours.

Incident No: 108 2018

Location: Heworth

North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves were called out yesterday by Northumbria Police to assist in the search for a vulnerable male in his 70s. The male was last seen near his home, late afternoon the day before.

Following a briefing and planning meeting with the Police Search Adviser, open and wooded areas close to the man’s home were searched. With limited further information available at that stage the Teams stood down.

The incident involved 15 Team members for 10 hours 20 minutes.

Incident No: 106 2018

Location: Harwood Forest

A busy end to August for our volunteers with three incidents in four days!

North East Ambulance Service requested Mountain Rescue’s assistance yesterday afternoon in locating an injured young mountain biker and his father. They were believed to be in the area of Simonside Forest.

With NEAS assets in the area North of Tyne MRT and ourselves immediately despatched a local Team member, one of our incident controllers, to liaise with the crews. Drivers were also allocated to our response vehicles. In the meantime our Incident Officer used our #PhoneFind technology and local knowledge to confirm the exact location of the casualty. Thankfully the young mountain biker was on a drivable track and we were able to direct the Ambulance resources into the location.

Our Team member on scene then assisted the crew to stabilise the injury before escorting everyone out of Harwood Forest.

We hope the casualty makes a swift recovery and that this incident hasn’t put him off mountain biking.

The incident involved 6 Team members for 1 hour 20 minutes.

Incident No: 105 2018

Location: Whitely Shield

Three days, two incidents! Yesterday we had a short lived incident involving a female in her 70s who had sustained a leg injury on the hillside above Whiteley Shield in the West Allen valley. The request for Mountain Rescue support had come from the North East Ambulance Service, who had established there was no vehicle access to the casualty’s location.

Ultimately neither ourselves and North of Tyne MRT nor NEAS were required as the caller and the casualty had thankfully managed to make their own way off the hill. Just as the first of our members was arriving at the RVP!

The incident involved 5 Team members for 31 minutes.

Incident No: 104 2018

Location: Sycamore Gap, Hadrian’s Wall

Our quiet period came to end earlier today when Northumbria Police requested Mountain Rescue’s support in evacuating an injured female walker on Hadrian’s Wall. The female had been stabilised by a Northumberland National Park Ranger before the Team’s and North of Tyne MRT’s members arrived.

Two North East Ambulance Service Paramedics were also transported to the scene. They provided pain relief before the walker was evacuated in a Mountain Rescue Landrover to the road at Steel Rigg.

We wish the walker a speedy recovery and would like to thank the Ranger and a passing Doctor for their assistance.

The incident involved 22 Team members for 2 hours 30 minutes.

Incident Number: 103 2018

Location: South Tyne Valley

Northumbria Police requested Mountain Rescue’s support in evacuating an injured walker from the South Tyne Valley close to Alston. Both Northumberland National Park and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team’s were mobilised to attend. The casualty was treated for an ankle injury and transported onwards to hospital in a Team vehicle.

An early morning call from Northumbria Police requesting Mountain Rescue’s support in locating a high risk, vulnerable male missing from home in the North Shields area. As the Team were mobilising for a first light search thankfully the missing person was found by Police Officers.

Location: Plessey Woods Country Park

A first for the Team, the number of incidents in one year has reached treble figures!

Northumbria Police requested Mountain Rescue’s support in locating a vulnerable missing male in the Plessey Woods area. Police dogs and the National Police Air Support unit were already searching for the missing person.

Our Duty Controller responded and used PhoneFind and SARLOC location tools. Unfortunately neither generated a response – the missing person needs to voluntarily click on the weblink in the text message to reveal their location on our mapping software.

Thankfully a member of the public came across the missing person, outside of the search area, and requested an Ambulance.

The incident involved 1 Team member for 2 hours.

Incident No: 98 2018

Incident No: 98
Date: 7 July 2018

Location: Harthope Valley and Wooler Youth Hostel and Shepherds’ Huts

On Saturday the Team provided rescue and medical cover for the 2018 Chevy Chase. This challenging fell race through the stunning Cheviot Hills attracts some 300 runners each run.

Whilst it doesn’t look like it from the photograph, the weather was very hot especially for those looking to complete the 22 miles of the race. All the runners heeded the preventative advice for heat exhaustion and heat stroke, but nevertheless the Team’s medics had to deal with a couple of competitors suffering from heat exhaustion. They also had to deal with a retiree from the race who was suffering from a probable sprained ankle.

Thanks to the North East Ambulance Service Community Paramedic from Wooler for their assistance too.

By the end of the day all competitors were accounted for and those we treated were given advice should their condition worsen. All in a days’s work!

We’re glad everyone had a great day and many were able to enjoy England’s win over Sweden. #ItsComingHome
