*** Incident No.46 ***

Sunday 28 August 2016, 03.23hrs

The busy August continues with our eleventh incident for the month in the early hours of this morning. Northumbria Police contacted the Team and North of Tyne MRT for assistance in locating a female walker in her early 70s, who had failed to meet up with her husband at 21.00hrs, the previous night.

The female had been walking the Northumberland Coastal Path in sections and had set off from Belford to walk to Fenwick village late afternoon. She had walked the section to Belford earlier in the day.

After trying to locate his wife, the husband raised the alarm in the early hours. As our Incident Controllers were being briefed by the Police officers in Belford, the Police located the female on a drivable track in the woods near to the coastal path.

The walker had fallen sustaining minor injuries but due to the poor conditions overnight, she was also suffering from the cold. She was assessed and treated by a Team medic before being transported to hospital. We hope she makes a full and swift recovery.

The Coastguard helicopter from Prestwick had also been requested to assist in the search, but thankfully was not required on this occasion.

The incident involved 4 members for 3.5 hours.

*** Incident No.45 ***

Saturday 27 August 2016, 19.13hrs

Northumbria Police contacted North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves on Saturday evening having received a report from two walkers saying they were lost in the Cheviot Hills. Little information was available as to the walkers intended route, other than they had started near Wooler.

One of Incident Controllers spoke to the walkers and ascertained that they roughly knew where they were. We then successfully used SARLOC – a SMS location App – to pin point the walkers’ location. They were on the south east side of Hedgehope Hill, on the edge of Threestoneburn Wood (or at least where the wood was!).

Guidance was then provided to the walkers by phone and SARLOC was used to ensure they were heading in the right direction – see photo. The walkers were confident in being able to walk off the hill themselves and evenutally arrived back in the Harthope Valley, where they had started by 21.40hrs and were met b Police officers.

Great use of technology which meant we didn’t need to leave the house!

The incident involved 4 members for 2.5 hours.

*** Incident No.44 ***

Wednesday 24 August 2016, 21.40 hrs

Late on Wednesday evening a request from Northumbria Police was received to assist in a search for an overdue walker in the Haltwhistle area. The male in his mid-20s had left home in Haltwhistle in the afternoon, with the intention of walking over Plenmeller Common towards Eals in the South Tyne valley, before returning along the valley to home. A distance of some 25-30km.

Along with North of Tyne MRT, we placed our members on standby whilst our Incident Controllers tried to ascertain more details on the walker’s exact route.

Thankfully as our Incident Controllers were being briefed by the Police, the walker returned home safely, albeit a bit later than planned!

The incident involved three Team members and another 14 were on standby for 2 hours 10 minutes.

*** Incident 41 ***

A busy period continues with our sixth call-out in two weeks. The Team along with North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team were called by Northumbria Police to attend an incident at Harbottle. A 10 year old boy had climbed on top of the Drakestone and was unable to reverse climb.

Assisted by the Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service crew from Rothbury and a specialist rope access team from Alnwick, the boy was eventually lowered to the ground.

The incident lasted 2.5 hours and involved 10 rescue Team members.

*** Incident No.40 ***

Monday 15th August 2016, 18.02 hrs

The Team along with North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team were called by Northumbria Police to attend an incident on Hadrians Wall east of Housesteads Roman fort. A female walker had slipped and sustained head and rib injuries. Two Team members were close by and quickly arrived on scene. Following initial treatment the walker was transported in Team Land Rover to a waiting NEAS Ambulance.

The incident involved 8 team members for 75 minutes.

*** Incident No.38 ***

Monday 8th August 2016, 15.15 hrs
The Team along with North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team were called by Northumbria Police to assist a walker with a lower leg injury on the Pennine Way above the College Valley. Fortunately for the casualty the MCA Rescue Helicopter from Prestwick was in the process of finishing a mission for the Tweed Valley Rescue Team and was able to collect the casualty from the hill. Two Team members located the rest of the party as they descended off the hill and with assistance from the Police escorted them back to their transport at Hethpool.

The incident involved 12 Team members for 3 hours.

*** Incident No.36 ***

Tuesday 2 August 2016, 20.10hrs
Chollerford, Northumberland

Two boys in their mid to late teens went missing on the Hadrian’s Wall Path yesterday and failed to turn up at the meeting point with their parents. Thankfully soon after Northumbria Police contacted ourselves and North of Tyne MRT, and initial enquiries were being made by one of our incident controllers, the boys turned up safe and well.

We like these types of incidents!

The incident involved 4 members for 20 minutes.

*** Incident No.27 ***

Wednesday 15 June, 04.46hrs

A short lived incident! The Team alongside North of Tyne MRT were contacted by Northumbria Police in the early hours of this morning to assist in the search for a high risk missing male. The male was believed to be in the Westerhope area of Newcastle.

As one of our Incident Controllers was speaking to the Police Search Adviser, the missing person was located close to his last known point.

Those of us who had been woken by the alert then went back to sleep.

The incident involved one member for 10 minutes.

*** Incident No.25 ***

Tuesday 24 May 2016, 14.23hrs

Unfortunately today was not the day for climbers in Northumberland. As we were about to stand down from the previous incident, Northumbria Police activated the Team and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team for a male climber who had fallen at Kyloe Crag.

A Team vehicle which was almost back at our Pegswood Fire Station base was swiftly despatched along with two Team members, whilst the remainder of the Team were called out. A few members travelled from Hadrian’s Wall in the west whilst others not involved in the previous incident headed direct to the scene.

Three Team members and a NEAS Paramedic arrived on scene at approximately the same time, within 30 minutes of the activation. The Paramedic and a Team medic stabilised the casualty who had sustained a serious lower leg injury in his fall.

Given the nature of the terrain and the casualty’s injuries it was deemed a helicopter evacuation was required. Our incident controller requested a Coastguard helicopter for its winching capability, which was duly tasked from Prestwick.

The helicopter on arrival at Kyloe Crag winched the stretcher and casualty on board from the location below the crag. The casualty was then transferred to a crewed Ambulance for onward transport to hospital.

The North East Ambulance Service HART team was also involved in the incident. A true multi-agency response.

Again we hope the climber makes a full and swift recovery.

The incident involved 11 Team members for 2 hours 20 minutes.

*** Incident No.22 ***

Monday 16 May, 19.55hrs

Northumbria Police requested the assistance of North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team and ourselves yesterday evening to assist in the search for a high risk 51 year old male in the Houghton-le-Spring area.

A search plan based on missing person data and other available information was agreed by our incident controllers with the Police Search Adviser, before the two Teams were called out.

Soon after our vehicles and Team members arrived at the RV, the missing person returned home. Seemingly our presence had helped to flush him out!

A good ending. Most Team members were also back home just before midnight for a few hours sleep before work today.

The incident involved 18 members for 2 hours 40 minutes.
